"This is an unbelievable performance, especially given the fact that not many have given us a chance in the women's doubles. Hats off to the doubles pair of Jwala and Aswani for their magnificent performance," she commented on arrival along with her teammates here on Saturday after a successful campaign in the Games.

The badminton players were given a warm reception on their arrival. However, the officials of the AP Olympic Association and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh were not there to receive the players.

'No doubt, Asian Games is a totally different proposition with the Chinese and the Indonesians taking part. But going into that with the gold in your kitty should make you confident, if not complacent," India's best woman shuttler remarked.

Twenty-year-old Saina, who clinched the women's singles gold on the final day to help India finish second overall in the standings of the Games, is delighted that her victory contributed to India's medal tally. "Yes, there was pressure being the last gold at stake for India. But, once I was on the court, the whole focus was on my game and I was not thinking about anything else," she recalled. "It was obviously the most memorable fight back in my career and I am happy that I could win the gold eventually holding off a spirited challenge from the Malaysian girl," she explained. "I won't say I was surprised by Mew Choo Wong's game in the final but this should be expected in an international competition and also a reminder that no match is won till it is actually clinched in any event," she pointed out.

Jwala Gutta and Aswani Ponappa, the women's doubles pair which clinched the gold, are equally delighted. 'It has been a fabulous week in Delhi. We defied all odds and surprised many with our gold," remarked Jwala. "The understanding between us was amazing and I should reiterate that Ashwani played much better than many would have expected. She is a fantastic player and never really showed any nerve in the final," Jwala pointed out.

Referring to her adverse comments on BAI president B. K. Varma, Jwala said she was only expressing her regret at not being congratulated on winning the doubles and that she did not say anything more. "Even now I am yet to get a congratulatory message from him," she moaned.
Skybadmintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02900198137247666918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8893614040279758056.post-63405374577311917202010-10-15T13:10:00.000-07:002010-10-15T13:10:00.716-07:00Commonwealth Games - badminton - Men's Singles - Y.Z.A.Chen vs C.W.Lee - Quarter final - part 1/2Skybadmintonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02900198137247666918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8893614040279758056.post-46558899719438255632010-10-15T13:08:00.000-07:002010-10-15T13:08:35.944-07:00Commonwealth Games - badminton - Men's Singles - Y.Z.A.Chen vs C.W.Lee - Quarter final - part 2/2Skybadminton
The pair claimed the Doubles Women bronze medal in a closely fought match between England's Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White last night at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
It is the first medal Australia has won in the sport in the Commonwealth Games since they won two bronze at the Kuala Lumpur Games in 1998.
For Kate Wilson-Smith, it was a perfect pay off for her personal commitment of taking 14 months of leave-without-pay from her job to ensure she was in peak condition for the Games.
"I eat, I sleep, I train ... there's not a lot of luxuries in my life," Kate said of her training regime before she left for Delhi.
The bronze medal play off did not go without a little controversy, after an English player was shown a yellow card for arguing with the chair umpire about a disputed line call.
After losing the first set, Australia won the bronze in the final.
A late third set comeback from the English pair unable to be converted in a result.
It could have been five, which would have meant an all-Malaysian mixed doubles final, but the young Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying pair were foiled by their inexperience as they went down fighting in their semi-final against Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwark of England.

Lee Chong Wei cruised into the men's singles final, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong also had it easy in their men's doubles last four clash while Wong Mew Choo overcame stubborn resistance from England's Liz Cann.

She will meet India's badminton darling Saina Nehwal, who beat Susan Egelstaff of Scotland 21-10, 21-17 yesterday.
With Kien Keat-Chin Eei Hui defeating Chayut Triyachart-Yao Lei of Singapore in their mixed doubles semi-final, Malaysian hopes were raised as Peng Soon-Liu Ying held match point against Robertson-Jenny on the adjacent court but couldn't finish.

Kien Keat-Eei Hui, playing for only the second time together, were also pushed hard but their experience came to their aid as they beat Triyachart-Yao Lei 19-21, 21-16, 21-18 in 65 minutes. Robertson-Jenny, the top seeds, beat Peng Soon-Liu Ying 19-21, 21-13, 23-21 and promised to give Kien Keat-Eei Hui a tough fight in tomorrow's final.

"We have a chance and we are not going to let that go to waste," said Robertson.

The mixed doubles title is the only gold Malaysia have not won at the Commonwealth Games.

Kien Keat said he and regular mixed doubles partner Wong Pei Tty have beaten the English pair before.

"I would rate our chances as even as the English pair will also be determined to win the gold," said Kien Keat, who showed no signs of fatigue when he and Tan Boon Heong beat Singapore's Hendra Saputra-Hendri Wijaya 21-11, 21-8 in the doubles semi-final.

Kien Keat will also square off with Robertson and his partner Anthony Clark in the men's doubles final after the English pair beat Triyachart-Derek Wong of Singapore 21-10, 17-21, 21-14.

As for Chong Wei, Chetan Anand of India wasn't in his class as the Malaysian won 21-11, 21-12 and will face Rajiv Ouseph of England in the final tomorrow. Ouseph, the second seed, ended the run of another Indian, P. Kashyap 19-21, 21-12, 21-18.

Mew Choo needed three games to beat Susan but that didn't matter to her as she promised to give Saina a fight.

"The pressure is on her and I will try to play my normal game," said Mew Choo.

Top seeded Saina will now meet Malaysian Mew Choo Wong in the final.

Mew got the better of England's Liz Cann, seeded fourth, 21-12, 18-21, 21-17. Saina would be a favourite to win the battle on Thursday as she had beaten the Malaysian in the singles match of mixed team event final last week.

Saina was at ease in the first game and raced to a 11-8 lead. She consolidated the lead with some crisp net play and deceptive shots.

Susan tried to make a comeback in the second game when she levelled at 5-5 before Saina nosed ahead. Susan lost her cool when some close calls went against her and slumped to errors, before Saina finished the match in 33 minutes.
