The Manx badminton team were the first Isle of Man athletes to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Monday. The squad faced the toughest of openings with a match against world champions Malaysia at the Badminton complex at Siri Fort. Despite some fine performances the Manx side were whitewashed 5-0. Team manager Geoff Clague said: "If we had to play the best team in the tournament, then it's best to get them out of the way first." He added: "The whole team played well and Josh [Green] played exceptionally." Green, who is the reigning UK Under-19 champion, gave the performance of the day against men's number-one seed Lee Chong Wei. The 18-year-old was beaten 2-0 but took 22 points in his 21-16, 21-6 defeat. Green said: "That's the first time I've played a player in the world top ten and I really enjoyed it. "The team is really upbeat now for the against Nigeria." Mixed Doubles Matt Wilkinson and Kim Clague lost 21-5, 21-7 to Kien Keat Koo and Ee Hui Chin Men's Singles Josh Green lost 21-16, 21-6 to Lee Chong Wei Women's Singles Cristen Callow lost 21-6, 21-6 to Mew Choo Wong Men's Doubles Matt Wilkinson and Josh Green lost 21-10, 21-5 to Peng Soon Chan and M. Hafiz Hashim Women's Doubles Cristen Callow and Kim Clague lost 21-7, 21-12 to Liu YingGoh and Khe Wei Woon |
