Badminton in Bangladesh !

6th September 2010

The Game 'Badminton' was originated by the British during the time of ruling India Subcontinent. It was then played by the family members of Royal British Families on outside garden or in parks at afternoon. Although this Game was originated in India subcontinent it got very popular with the other parts of Asia like in China, Malaysia, Indonesia,Japan,Hong Kong,Korea in a short time. Recent years they are the rockers of Badminton and hardly leave a trophy to the rest world.
Now my topic is what's about Badminton in Bangladesh ?
How far I know it's a very popular game in Bangladesh during winter season when wind don't create a problem on shuttle for outdoor courts. Young Bangladeshi like to play Badminton during night time.It is mostly played outdoor there, indoor facilities are just in divisions and in Capital city Dhaka. It is widely played in all over Bangladesh including all educational institutions level starts from school, college up to University. Sometimes people in the rural areas hardly know that Badminton is an indoor game which needs to play in indoor ground. This is because there are less fund and foundation to elaborate the affinity of Badminton amongst the people. There is too less tournaments held there to say. Only National Badminton Championships and some other division level,District level tournaments cover the whole year.Even these tournaments are not very promptly held.
Another important reason is Media ! Bangladeshi Media doesn't like to broadcast Badminton at all, even the national ranked no: 1 player is rarely known to public there. Bangladeshi National ranked players participate some of international tournaments like Commonwealth Games,South Asian Games,World Championships in India etc.
Bangladesh Badminton Foundation(BBF) is the national organizer at Dhaka. Recently they have enforced some facilities for developing players from all the districts to train them by national coach at Dhaka indoor Badminton stadium. Also they include Badminton at BKSP (National Sports Council) level to train the Badminton beginners from the root.
Hope it works and someday someone wins  a BWF super series for Bangladesh.

Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat rolled back the years to reach the final of the world badminton championships with a 21-10 22-20 victory on Saturday over South Korean 13th seed Park Sung-hwan.
Hidayat, Olympic gold-medal winner in 2004 and world champion in 2005, has not hit those heights since for a variety of reasons, on and off court.
He signalled he was back on track by disposing of world number one Lee Chong Wei in the quarter-finals on Friday, then beat Park, a giant-killer himself after beating titleholder Lin Dan in the last eight.Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat celebrates after defeating South Korea's Park Sung-hwan during their Men's semi-final match at the 2010 Badminton World Championships at the Coubertin stadium in Paris, August 28, 2010.
Hidayat, 29, breezed through the first game but trailed 20-18 in the second as Park battled on but once he saved game points and levelled at 20-20 the Indonesian was not to be denied.
The fifth seed told a media conference: "When it was 20-18 I knew I had to go on and when it was 20-20 I was confident I would win."
Park's cause was not helped by a battle against "drift" -- a slight breeze in stadiums which can carry the shuttle just out of play.
He suffered at least four such errors in the second game, including, critically, on the first match point he faced.
The Korean told reporters: "He was the better player but at the end it was too many unforced errors that cost me. He put too much pressure on me."
In Sunday's final, Hidayat plays fourth seed Chen Jin of China who came from behind to beat Denmark's Peter Gade 19-21 21-8 21-11 as European hopes of a title died.
FLYING START
Gade, 33, a world finalist in 2001, got off to a flying start in the hot and humid de Coubertin stadium but Chen, beaten finalist in 2009, fought his way back and in the end was fully in control.
Chen has expressed his wish to oust Lin Dan as China's No. 1 and on Saturday's form he could achieve his goal. Tenacious in defence and with an impressive armoury in attack, he looked very much a world champion in the making.
Gade, seeded two, told a media conference: "In the first game I started very fast and it was difficult for me to keep the speed."
Chen said: "My first aim was to make the final and I will be all out to win to make up for my defeat in last year's championships."
China are assured of gold in the women's singles after Tine Baun's defeat by Lin Wang as the second semi-final later on Saturday is an all-Chinese affair between third seed Wang Xin and Wang Shixian, seeded six.
Baun, twice an All England champion as Tine Rasmussen, was clearly hampered by an elbow injury which had been building up during the week and she was below her best against seventh seed Lin.
The tall Dane told reporters: "I think she gained confidence when she saw I was not as sharp as usual and could not smash so well. I felt early on it was going to be very difficult."
Like the women's singles, Sunday's mixed doubles final will be an all-China battle and gold in both the men's and women's doubles is also perfectly possible.

PARIS, Aug. 29 -- The powerhouse China bagged all five golds at the Badminton World Championships on Sunday, repeating its sweeping triumph 23 years ago.

The eighth seeds Zheng/Ma took control of the whole match, defeating the sixth seeds He/Yu 21-14, 21-10 after 42 minutes.

China's Wang Lin edged out teammate Wang Xin to take the women' s singles title at the Badminton World Championships on Sunday.
The fourth seed Chen overplayed the former world and Olympic champion Hidayat 21-13, 21-15, marching one step further to the top as he lost to teammate Lin Dan in last year's final.
The women's singles and doubles finals were both featured fights between Chinese players.
As a result, the seventh seed Wang Lin needed 58 minutes to overcome the third seed Wang Xin 21-11, 19-21, 21-13 before the Olympic champions Du Jing/Yu Yang defeated the top seeds Ma Jin/ Wang Xiaoli 21-9 and 21-17.

WORLD number one pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong made it a lovely day in Paris for Malaysia when they stormed into the country’s first men’s doubles final in 13 years at the World Championships in Pierre de Coubertin Stadium yesterday. We’re in the final: Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong celebrating after defeating China’s Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen in the men’s doubles semi-finals of the World Championships in Paris yesterday. Kien Keat-Boon Heong won 21-14, 21-18.
The duo continued to show their strong determination and ambition to be the first world champion when they clawed back from 10-16 in the second game to beat China’s Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen 21-14, 21-18 in 40 minutes.
Today, they will take on the winner of the other semi-final match between two previous world champions – Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China and Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.
It was the duo’s first final appearance in three outings after their failure to live up to expectations in the Kuala Lumpur in 2007 and Hyderabad last year.
Boon Heong was happy with the win but vowed to keep his feet firmly on the ground.
“It feels good to finally make the final for the first time. But the battle is far from over and we have to stay focused,” said Boon Heong.
“I am in better condition compared to yesterday (on Friday’s win against Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung of South Korea). It is now all in our minds.
“I was not too happy with the way we played in the second game. The shuttle was fast and we were too deep behind and the front was neglected,” he said.
“Fortunately, we changed our strategy and regained our control in the game.
“We have to be alert all the time tomorrow (today).”
After a morale-boosting opening game win, the Malaysians were staring at the possibility of being dragged into a decider when they trailed 10-16.
The Chinese made them an easy target at the front court but fortunately, the Malaysians kept up the pressure to slowly find their way back to victory.
Kien Keat, who has won a total of three bronze medals in the world series, was happy to clear the semi-final hurdle for the first time.
“It is amazing how Boon Heong and I came back from 10-16 in the second game. It is all about our fighting spirit and determination here,” said Kien Keat.
Kien Keat won a bronze medal with Chan Chong Ming in 2005 and another bronze in the mixed doubles with Wong Pei Tty in 2006 and last year ended with the bronze with Boon Heong.
“Boon Heong and I are fitter – compared to our form in the Thomas Cup Finals. Malaysians have been branded as failures at the final hurdle but we will try to change that tomorrow,” he said.
“We have ended a 36-year wait for a Asiad title in 2006. Now, we have the chance to win the first world title. We will not be too worried about this but we will go all out to give our best.
“That is our promise and we hope our Malaysian fans will pray for us.”
